Rivers and Lakes on Mars Although there is no water in liquid form on the surface of Mars today, evidence has been found of ancient river and lake beds. Scientists believe that liquid water once existed on the surface of Mars, leaving behind evidence of its presence in the form of dry river channel

A high-resolution satellite captured detailed images of a rocky Martian cliff, showing that it formed from rivers more than 3.7 billion years ago, roughly around the same time life was beginning on Earth.

The images also show that the river processes that formed these rocks occurred over a very long timespan.
